Rocky VI .... Rocky Balboa

Who was the greatest, who was the best of all time...

Rocky Balboa (formerly known as Rocky VI) is a film written by, directed by, and starring Sylvester Stallone as underdog boxer Rocky Balboa.

Stallone has done the near impossible thing.. a 60 year old takes on a current boxing champ.. But what a way to give a send off.. seriously, I did not like the way the Vth was taken.. movie was good but not for a send off.. I missed seeing rocky inside the ring.. all rocky fans, every one who watched Rocky-I would watch this..

But why did stallone wanted to get this movie out..??

here, this is what the director got to say...

SYLVESTER STALLONE:
I just didn't like the way the last one ended. Truthfully I thought the last one it, it just wasn't over, you know, you think it's over, and you really go back and you rehash it in your own mind like an athlete. You go, "God, you know, maybe I just retired too soon. Maybe Rocky just retired too soon." And yeah, someone told him he had problems. He had health problems. He, he had a little brain damage, but he never even had a second opinion. He just automatically assumed it. We do have our ups and downs, and it was a down side of his life. But I think that the real affirmation of life is what comes after that? Do you come out of that valley or not, you know?

No great words or quotes.. but just what we all felt.. sadly, it is not being released in INDIA.. not the first day....

Rocky [SYLVESTER STALLONE] takes a hard shot from Mason Dixon [ANTONIO TARVER] when the final round of the Academy Award-winning Rocky franchise hits theaters on December 20, 2006. Written and directed by SYLVESTER STALLONE. Sly and former light heavyweight champ, Antonio Tarver traded real blows in an effort to make Rocky's last fight his most realistic. -Craig Zablo

"They just want to prove that the last thing to age is the heart." And this is just, you know, a symbolic gesture that when you're young at heart you're basically in the game.

As ROCKY BALBOA always said... "It's not about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit. And keep moving forward."

Myth: Bullets fly so fast that they are unaffected by gravity.

This is one of the n topics (why do we have 2 eyes, gravity, speed etc..,) we discussed yesterday.. so boys had to say that gravity does not effect a bullet fired from a gun, because the speed is so high that gravity does not act on it.. so the bullet travels horizontally.. (does this mean it escaped the gravitational force?).. but

the fact..

A bullet is a projectile and as such, its horizontal motion is unrelated to its vertical motion. Just because it is moving rapidly in the horizontal direction does not mean that it will fall any slower than an object that is not moving horizontally. They still fall with the acceleration due to gravity
(). (source)

Here is a excellent example given by Joy Wagon... The Monkey and the Gun

We can't see the fall of a bullet because it happens so quickly that your eye cannot catch it. The trajectory from the point where the bullet comes out of muzzle and the point it hits the target is not horizontal but a curve (practice makes your brain calculate this gravitational pull, similar to a ball you throw to hit a target).. so what is it all proportional to ? is it time??

Here is a experiment conducted by B.E. Spencer... A Closer Look at Trajectories

Newton's first law says that the bullet will continue to travel on a straight line forever if no forces act upon it. But the bullet falls, so there is a pull and it is gravitational force which is pulling it..

So.. when you get to shoot something.. make sure you keep in mind that gravitational force acts on the bullet and shoot accordingly..

Updated after the first comment :)

Sights on guns are used to adjust for the effects of gravity on a bullet. When you set the sights on a gun, you must set them for the range you are likely to be shooting from. Basically what you are doing is adjusting the "Line from sights" to cross the "Bullet path" at the distance you will likely be shooting from. Beyond this length, your bullet will hit low, closer than this length, your bullet will hit high. This also only sets your gun correctly for level ground. If you shoot down from a hill, your bullet will hit high or if you shoot up a hill (dangerous practice) your bullet will hit low.

How does google earn money and How can I earn from them?

The following question How do these earn per click ads on google and other sites work?

triggered me to write this entry..

Anyways... here you go..

Google search engine is the main source for google to earn revenew. Your immediate question may be.. how does it earn when we do not pay anything while we search.

Google.com earns most of its revenue by allowing other website owners to advertise on their search result pages (these are the same ads which you see sometimes on the top of al results or mostly on the right side as Sponsored Links). All this is managed through a program they call Adwords. Now if you want to advertise your site on google by paying them anywhere between 5 cents to $30 per click to your website from google then all you need is to signup with google adwords.

Google does not post your ad for every result,

You create your ads
You create ads and choose keywords, which are words or phrases related to your business.
Get keyword ideas

Your ads appear on Google
When people search on Google using one of your keywords, your ad may appear next to the search results. Now you're advertising to an audience that's already interested in you.

You attract customers
People can simply click your ad to make a purchase or learn more about you. It's that easy!

They provide the best tools, you can target your customers, by asking google to just publish your ads for the seraches done from aparticular area. If you want to advertise your local business then that's the best option available.

And you choose how much money you want to give in a day and per click (it can be anywhere from $1 to $10000000.... )

How can I earn money from these advertisements.

Now you can earn a share of the revenue that Google earns from Adwords by placing these same text ads on your site. In other words, you're helping Google advertise and they pay you a percentage of what they earn.

This program is called AdSense.

Every website owner should be involved in this. It's just too good of an opportunity to pass up. Even if your site is just for information purposes, you can still participate and make decent money with AdSense -- or at least enough to fund your website.

So if you are one of those people that don't like the idea of paying for a site, this is an excellent way to earn your money back and then some.

Even if you earned as little as $10 in a month, it would more than likely cover some or all of the costs for your web site. Perhaps you are simply looking for ways to add additional revenue to your website, then it's perfect for that situation too.

This program is getting so popular, people are creating websites just to display the ads and profit from Google's AdSense alone.

I don't usually like to use the term "easy money" because there really is no such thing. You still have to create your own website and learn how to bring in traffic in order to make good money with this program.

I certainly don't want to make it sound like you get something for doing absolutely nothing. There's no such thing.

However, I've got to say that AdSense is probably the closest you'll ever come to fast money on the Internet -- especially if you already have a website that gets a good amount of traffic.

What's even better...the program is completely free. You can also use it on multiple websites and there is no limit to the amount you can earn.

How AdSense Works
If you go to Google.com and do a search for almost any keyword phrase, you'll notice some "Sponsored Links" that appear on the right side of the screen that are relevant to the keywords you just searched for.

Website owners pay Google to display these ads and are charged a predetermined amount every time their ad gets clicked by a web surfer. With the AdSense program, you will display these same text ads on your site just like Google and get paid for it as well.

All you do is copy and paste some provided HTML code into your pages and Voila! the ads will show up. Every time an ad is clicked on your site, you will receive a certain percentage of what Google receives from the advertiser.

Once your account reaches $100, you'll receive a check in the mail. They send a check where ever you are in this WORLD.

"Is Google Crazy?"
I know what you're probably thinking...

"What's the catch here? Why would Google just give away money advertisers are paying them?"

The answer...

Because Google is very smart.

Now that I understand how AdSense works, I can see that it's a win-win situation for everyone involved, and the bottom line benefits Google. Let me explain...

Since the advertiser's ads are now being displayed on more web sites all over the internet (instead of just Google's site), they are getting much more exposure. More exposure means more clicks and even more traffic for their site over a shorter period of time.

This is good news for Google because the more traffic the advertisers receive, the faster their advertising funds are used up.

Remember, they get charged every time their site gets a visit; and of course, it is Google's hope that they'll continue to keep funneling more money into their account for more ad exposure.

What an ingenious way for Google to increase the amount of money they earn from advertisers while building loyalty with website owners (like us) who are now getting paid to help them advertise.

Of course, I'd expect nothing less from the most popular search engine on the web. :)

Divide to rule? Interesting piece ...

From Dr Dobb's Portal (CMP)

Embrace, Extend, Exterminate?

Over at ciol.com, Shashwat Chaturvedi has written a long and insightful backgrounder and analysis of the Microsoft/Novell pact, and what it means for global open source, and for the prospects of
open source in India.

Chaturvedi is a good thinker who knows his history and reasons well from premises. And he's interviewed some of the inheritors of Raymond Noorda's mantle, here, who add significant insight. Worth a read http://www.ciol.com/content/developer/dotNet/2006/106112101.asp

The Nokia 888 communicator changes shape on demand

Nokia recently unveiled a new concept phone (the Nokia 888) that changes shape on demand. The product took home first place in Nokia's Benelux design contest, thanks to a number of innovative features - such as liquid batteries, a flexible touch screen, and speech recognition - that make traditional mobile phone keys obsolete. The product even has a great tagline - "Perfect form does not exist... Form follows you." The Nokia 888 has the ability to transform how people think about mobile communication devices:

"A personal mobile communication device which lets you be free and fun. It is light, simple and carefree. You can change its form according to your needs during the day. You don't have to carry it in your pocket or on your wrist. You can carry it anywhere, in any form. You can roll it, bend it, put on your clothes like a clip. It also makes some form changes that makes it more ergonomical, i.e. when you want to talk on the phone, the body form turns into the form of the good old telephone. You can personalize these forms and record them. So it fits you the best in the way that you have chosen. Also e-motions let you send forms to other 888 users: i.e. you can send a heart shape to your girlfriend or a dancing figure to your friends to call them to the party tonight. This way you can talk without words."

The phone was designed by Tamer Nakisci for Nokia. Anyway, check out the comments on the Yanko Design site - people are calling the new phone "mind blowing," freaky," "really unbelievable" and "amazing." And, of course, there are the naysayers, who claim the phone is a "fake" (perhaps because a really annoying and really intrusive 888.com poker & casino advertisement pops up whenever you try to find out more about the Nokia 888 phone). It looks like there is a ready market for the phone if Nokia is able to move it from concept to mass-market commercial product.

Jog Falls India

Video Length: 38 secs

Video Length: 4 secs

Jog Falls, view from the bridge
Video Length: 1 min 20 secs
The water falls is about 100mts from here... if you observe carefully, you will see that the flow kinda ends... that's where the falls are...

Video of Jog Falls in late monsoon

This is another tall waterfall that runs amok during monsoon season, exceeding even Kaieteur Falls in Guyana in terms of height and volume. This video was taken during Monsoon..

River Sharavathi splits up into four different tracks which are named in accordance with their perceived trajectories. Going from left to right respectively in the picture, the names and the reasons for naming are:

* Raja (King): Named so because of its apparently 'dignified' and 'serene' fall.
* Roarer: This stream appears out of a mass of rocks, making a tremendous amount of noise.
* Rocket: Consists of a large volume of water streaming out of a small opening at a very high speed.
* Rani (Queen), also called Lady: The stream has a winding, twisting trajectory, said to resemble the movements of a female dancer.

What is google doing to make orkut mobile?

In shor the answer to the above question would be Dodgeball.

O! what Dodgeball? okie... Dodgeball is another SNS (Social networking Site) which google acquired last year, just that it is a mobile social networking site unlike orkut which is not yet on mobile.

So, google is going to integrate Dodgeball and Orkut.. which will make orkut go mobile.

here are few reasons why I think Google is going to integrate Dodgeball and Orkut...

1. Orkut has much more than Dodgeball but the later is much better on mobile and has already covered 22 cities.

2. Social networking has been the biggest thing going in 2006 (MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, etc). And it looks like mobile will be big next year. So SNS + Mobile seems the logical sequel.

3. Demographics are similar between Orkut and Dodgeball. All evidence points to Dodgeball being used mostly by young people. In Brazil, home to 65-70% (this is interesting) of the Orkut user base, it is mostly 13-30 year olds who use Orkut.

Anyways, I am not yet sure if this is going to happen anytime soon but as John Battelle even kind of predicted it back in May 2005, with this comment: "What is Dodgeball? I dunno, but is seems like Orkut + Mobile done right, I think."

But for sure the future is SNS + Mobile, isn't it cool you know what your freinds are doing online when you are on a move, waiting for a freind on the street, chatting with friends in those never ending traficc jams or just finding a new freind who is also stuck in the same traffic jam (cool.. I am coming up with crzy ideas).. I am gona stop it here... Orkut in Mobile is definetly coooool.

Money and Man

H.R.Khanna, former Indian supreme court justice, while inaugrating a seminar on company law:
It has been said if a man runs after money, he is money mad;
if he keeps it, he is a capitalis;
if he spends it, he is a playboy;
if he does not get it, he is a ne'er-do-well;
if does not try to get it, he lacks ambition.
Similarly, if he gets it without working for it, he is a parasite;
and
if he accumulates it after a lifetime of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life.

This clearly means, that money never matters, its the passion and your interest which you need to work for..

Sony Playstation's The Rule of Rose has shocked Europe's justice commissioner

The "obscene cruelty" of a psychological horror computer game has sparked calls for an EU-wide crackdown to safeguard children.

Sony Playstation's The Rule of Rose has so shocked Europe's justice commissioner Franco Frattini that he has written to all EU governments urging action to tighten controls on "dreadful" games which show and glorify violence.

He is demanding talks on the issue when Home Affairs ministers meet in Brussels next month.

He said: "An increasing number of such games display and even glorify violence, sometimes extreme violence."

"In particular one of the latest games (The Rule of Rose) relates to a young girl who becomes submitted to psychological and physical violence.

"This has shocked me profoundly for its obscene cruelty and brutality."

The Rule of Rose is a horror game involving a girl kidnapped by a secret society of orphans. The game has already caused controversy in Mr Frattini's native Italy, where the Mayor of Rome has vowed to have it banned.

Mr Frattini said: "Games where you are supposed to shoot down ordinary people walking on the streets or where you have to bully children at schools are other examples of obscene and perverse games.

"These types of games are dreadful examples for our children and may provoke or encourage violence or bully behaviour by children, or suggest this is a normal behaviour."

The Commissioner adds: "It is first and foremost the responsibility of the parents to protect children from such games, but I nevertheless think that we at member state and European level also have to take responsibility to protect children's rights."

Last July the Commission published its ideas for an "EU Strategy on the Rights of the Child".

Now Mr Frattini wants the Home Affairs ministers meeting on December 5 to take a first look at how to increase awareness of the potential risks of violent computer games with tougher labelling and restrictions on sales to youngsters.

He is suggesting a follow-up conference early next year to consider a new voluntary code of conduct on the production of interactive games for children.

He said: "We could focus on the relationship between our children and the interactive world they are confronted with nowadays - a world which brings windows of positive opportunities as well as potential dangers."

The Rule of Rose was released by Sony's Japanese division, but the company has left it to other publishers to handle wider distribution, including in America, Italy and the UK.

After the Mayor of Rome condemned the game, Corrado Buonanno of Sony Computer Entertainment reportedly described the game as "unsuitable for the Italian and European public because of its content".

Tip #1 on how to solve Sudoku puzzles.

If you don't know how to play read the previous post [How to play Sudoku? :) Its fun. It's challenging. It's adictive!]

There's no right or wrong place to start – but we do have to start somewhere, so let's look at the three boxes at the top of the puzzle.

There's a 1 in the middle box, and a 1 in the box on the right – but the box on the left still needs a 1. At first glance you might think the 1 could go into any of the four empty cells. However, the 1 cannot go in the top row of the box, because the top row of the grid already has a 1. A grid-row has room for only one of each number. Nor can the 1 go in the second row of the box because the second row of the grid already has a 1. There's only one place left for the 1 to go.

Look for similar patterns elsewhere. You'll see something similar with the 2s in the stack of boxes down the middle. The top box doesn't have its 2 yet. There is a 2 in each of the center and bottom boxes, so we can rule out five of the seven empty cells in the top box. This is not quite the same situation as before, because there are two places the 2 could go. Some people just guess where the 2 should go, but it is better to use logic. It's best to have a reason why a particular number must go in a particular place. It's time to look in the other direction – at the rows of the grid, not just the columns. The third grid-row from the top already has its 2, so we can rule out one extra cell from the top box. Now there's only one place left for the 2 to go.

Sometimes you can build on success. Let's see if that 2 leads us to success in the top-right box. After considering the rows, we can rule out only four of the seven empty cells. Even after considering the columns, we can rule out only five cells, still leaving two places for the 2 to go. Never mind, we learned something about where the 2 can go in the top-right box.

In fact, you might like to lightly pencil a small ‘2’ into each of the possible cells. In the Sudoku program these small numbers are called pencilmarks and they can be added and removed very easily.

Pencilmarks are useful reminders, but be sparing with them. Using too many can cloud the issues you are trying to clarify.

What next?

This technique on this page will get you launched into solving, but to finish a puzzle you may need to discover other techniques as well. Maybe you would prefer to make those discoveries on your own. It's certainly possible – you don't need to read or search for any more techniques on this stuff. So, if this page has sparked enough ideas for you to start solving right now, good luck and enjoy!

How to play Sudoku? :) Its fun. It's challenging. It's adictive!

I have seen people asking how to play Sudoku, it's quite a old game now!! everyone should know how to play. I asked one of my friend if he plays sudoku, he said he does not like games which invloves maths.. come on.. there's no maths involved. The grid has numbers. but nothing has to add up to anything else.

You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

Its simple... just " Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 through 9. "

Its fun. It's challenging. It's adictive!

Wanna Play a Game, Click here... :-)))) (its a grid with quite a few puzzles)

Solving time is typically from 10 to 30 minutes, depending on your skill and experience.
You did not get it yet... here read this for clear explanation.. [Tip #1 on how to solve Sudoku puzzles] this is more of technique which will let you solve the puzzle, in fact a clear example.

Casino Royale Review (2006, 17th November)

Casino Royale - I am not happy with the story, acting, or in fact anything in the movie. Sandy bought tickets for the movie a day before anticipating the rush. First of all symphony was quite nosiy and not very comfortable seating arrangment. About the movie, the movie lacked the bond style from the very begining, the black and white titles, its definetly old style and copied from other movies. Then comes the first 5 mins of movie, the chase, the guy whome bond was chasing was pretty good and had a perfect style but not bond, he was trying very hard to run. Then comes the story, its definelty not a story which can make upto a bond movie. Bond movies have always been about gadgets, cars, bond girls and much more but the movie lacked every bit of it. Bond looks pretty nervous through out the movie, he tries hard to smile and does not impress any girl in the movie, in fact too old. In one line, the new bond, does not look cool, too old, does not have the style. It is just another movie. Which I am sure will not make a good business.

It is something which you own on this internet space, like a email account, a domain name, a website!! If you own any one of the above 3 (which are all related) that means you have a online identity.. cool.. isn't it?.. but wait.. is your email address somthing like
joe@yahoo.com / joe@yahoo.com / joe@yahoo.com / joe@yahoo.com.. then you don't have your own online identity as you dont own any of the above.. Switch your personal email to google mail (you still get mail @ your_domain and can send from @ your_domain) its new GOOGLE APPS

Google Apps for Your Domain lets you offer private-labeled email, IM and calendar accounts to all of your users, so they can share ideas and work more effectively. These services are all unified by the start page, a new addition to this service, a unique, dynamic page where your users can preview their inboxes and calendars, browse content and links that you choose, search the web, and further customize the page to their liking. You can also design and publish web pages for your domain. It's all free and everything is hosted by Google. No hardware or software required.

What does this mean?

In layman terms, google has come up with this wonderful mail server, where you can setup mail to your personal domain, to be sent to google servers directly by changing the MX records.

How do I setup?

Just goto http://google.com/a/ and you can set it up in 2 mins.

How do I access my mail?

Once the setup is over, you have to change the MX records with your hosting company (no this is not forwarding, you will no more receive mail on to your server but they will directly be collected on google server)

Create the user accounts, if there are more than 1 user you want to create at once, you can use Advanced tools. So, which ever mail you send to say admin@your_domain.com will be sent to google servers.

To check your email.. Log in to your Google Apps mail account (http://mail.google.com/a/your_domain.com).

Why would I want to switch to google apps?

1. Google has hundreds of users working on making their gmail better.
2. They have the best spam buster I have seen. So, no more spam in your inbox.
3. Every email account you create gets a 2GB of space! does your hosting company provide 2GB for your email account for free?
4. The gmail interface is the best webmail interface, fast, excellent labeling system, you dont have to delete the mail any more.
5. You can start using gtalk with your personal email address, use google calender with your personal email address and many more features coming..

Stratup! Why very few succeed?

Paul Graham finds that not trying hard enough could be the only reason why startups fail. Most startups fail because they don't make something people want, and the reason most don't is that they don't try hard enough. He lists amongst other things, traps that need to be avoided : The Single founder syndrome, choice of location, marginal niche, idea imitations, obstinacy, raising little money, spending too much, Poor investor management , Founder fights , Insincere and half hearted attempts. Poor programmers, wrong choice of platform, slowness in launching, early launch, no defined customer base etc.. In today's world as he sees it, success may flow from not ducking key principles like focus on custmer success. He adds,“The companies that win are the ones that put users first. Google, for example. They made search work, then worried about how to make money from it. And yet some startup founders still think it's irresponsible not to focus on the business model from the beginning. They're often encouraged in this by investors whose experience comes from less malleable industries. It is irresponsible not to think about business models. It's just ten times more irresponsible not to think about the product”

A Half-Hearted Effort - This one point has been troubling me a lot. I am personally in a stage where I can see that I am working towards it but not with full effort. I ASK MYSEFL WHY? GOOD, I NEED TO FIGURE THIS OUT AND START WORKING HARD.

As Steve jobs keeps it, Stay hungry.. Stay foolish is the key for success of any business. You don't have to go with your gut feeling when you can think of a flawless solution, but when you are stuck between 2 things, I say you should go with the one in which you believe in…. you know it will be the path to success of your company, even when there is greater risk involved.

Stay hungry, stay foolish - Steve Jobs

This is an amazing speech by Steve Jobs in Stanford University's graduation ceremony!

Drawing from some of the most pivotal points in his life, Steve Jobs, chief executive officer and co-founder of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, urged graduates to pursue their dreams and see the opportunities in life's setbacks—including death itself—at the university's 114th Commencement on Sunday in Stanford Stadium.

Wearing jeans and sandals under his black robe, Jobs delivered a keynote address that spanned his adoption at birth to his insights into mortality after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer about a year ago. In plainspoken terms, his address struck a balance between the obstacles he has encountered during his notably public life and the lessons he has gleaned—for example, from his high-profile ousting in 1985 from the computer company he helped start.

"I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me," said Jobs, 50. "It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods in my life."

Huge Native American face on Google Earth

Here's another weird finding on Google Earth. Somewhere in Alberta in Canada you can spot mountains or large hills that look like the face of an Indian.

It looks pretty real, even a lot more realistic than the face on Mars IMO. It's also pretty big, I used the measure tool in Google Earth to measure the size of the Native American's forehead and its about 225 meters (0.14 miles) long.

You can check it out in Google Maps or just enter 50° 0'38.20"N 110° 6'48.32"W in Google Earth. And like someone in our comment section said, with a bit of imagination you can see he has an earbud in his ear (maybe he's listening to his iPod?)

A Great Day For Freedom

On the day the wall came down
They threw the locks onto the ground
And with glasses high we raised a cry for freedom had arrived
On the day the wall came down
The Ship of Fools had finally ran aground
Promises lit up the night like paper doves in flight

I dreamed you had left my side
No warmth, not even pride remained
And even though you needed me
It was clear that I could not do a thing for you

Now life devalues day by day
As friends and neighbors turn away
And there's a change that, even with regret, cannot be undone
Now frontiers shift like desert sands
While nations wash their bloodied hands
Of loyalty, of history, in shades of grey

I woke to the sound of drums
The music played, the morning sun streamed in
I turned and I looked at you
And all but the bitter residues slipped away...slipped away

failed PPS

okie.. I failed in continuing PPS (polyphasicsleep).. blame it on alarm or me.. I am starting all over again.. yes I am starting it today once again..

Polyphasicsleep - 7:24AM - 10/18/2006

I just woke up.. its been around 6mins that I woke up.. From today I will be practicing polyphasicsleep (let me call it PPS for short).. when ever I kind of feel bored or have nothing to do.. I will update my blog of how I am doing with my polyphasicsleep transition. This transition, according to research, will take 1-2 weeks.. After the transition I should be able to get into REM phase with in 2-5mins of sleeping.

This PPS will give me 21hours to work and I think I will use it to the best by making sure all my clients are very happy with my service and work on products which I want to.

I am not going to follow the uber sleep method, but I will sleep for 30mins when ever I feel damn sleepy.. and do it 6times a day. I will make sure there is a minimum gap of 2-3 hours between each of 30mins nap.

Polyphasicsleep (PPS)
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyphasic_sleep

Polyphasic sleep (also known as Da Vinci sleep or Uberman sleep) is a sleep pattern intended to reduce sleep time to 2–5 hours daily. This is achieved by spreading out sleep into short naps of around 20–45 minutes throughout the day.

The process of adapting to a polyphasic schedule involves a physically very difficult one- to two-week transition period. Thereafter, independent testers claim to experience no apparent drop of cognition or alertness, despite the few hours of sleep attained each day. On the other hand, polyphasic sleep requires a rigid schedule, which makes it infeasible for many people.

Little scientific research has been performed on polyphasic sleeping. Much, if not most, of the information about it comes from the claims of independent testers.

Theory

Ordinary "monophasic" sleep consists of several stages, some of which may not be necessary in the amounts or proportions that naturally occur. It is believed by advocates of polyphasic sleep that after undergoing controlled sleep deprivation during an initial adjustment period, the brain will start to enter the essential sleep stages much more quickly, as a survival strategy. Once this adaptation is learned, the theory goes, a comfortable and sustainable equilibrium of sleeping in only naps can be established.

Boat racers have used a similar technique to avoid dangers of sleeping for extended periods alone at sea. Astronauts have also occasionally tried similar strategies during extended crises. There is a substantial interest in polyphasic sleep at NASA and among the US military, especially the Marine Corps.

Practice

Self-testers often "crash" several times while testing and accidentally sleep through for several hours longer than intended. Current polyphasic users and scientific evidence (Stampi's) both suggest that problems relating to tiredness dissipate around 10 days into the schedule, and disappear completely around 14 days into the schedule, but many self-testers do not effectively plan their two week transition period. Therefore, they remain tired long after the target 14-day end date and eventually terminate the experiment.

Mechanism

According to Claudio Stampi's book ("Why We Nap: Evolution, Chronobiology, and Functions of Polyphasic and Ultrashort Sleep"), in sleep deprived condition, measurements of a polyphasic sleeper's memory retention and analytical ability show increases as compared with monophasic and biphasic sleep (but still a decrease of 12% as compared with entrained free running sleep). According to Stampi, the improvement is due to an extraordinary evolutionary predisposition to adopt such a sleep schedule; he hypothesizes this is possibly because polyphasic sleep was the preferred schedule of ancestors of the human race for thousands of years prior to the adoption of the monophasic schedule.

There are at least two schools of thought as to how polyphasic adaptation affects sleep patterns. One school claims that REM sleep is the most necessary stage, and that the body needs multiple hours of this stage each day, so therefore every nap taken by a polyphasic sleeper consists entirely of REM sleep. Another school acknowledges research done on users of this schedule (Scientific American Frontiers 1991), which suggests that the body will enter different stages of sleep during the different naps—REM during some, deeper sleep during others—in order to get some of each essential stage.

The idea that polyphasic sleepers experience only REM sleep is relatively popular among advocates, perhaps because some theories of sleep suggest that REM is largely responsible for the mental rejuvenation effects of sleep. However, the role of REM sleep has been disputed in recent years. It has been documented that depriving rats of REM sleep in particular leads to death in 3 to 8 weeks, but the notion that REM sleep is the most important phase of sleep, or even necessary for good health, is dubious: depressed people are known to have excessive REM sleep [1]; and monoamine oxidase inhibitors nearly completely abolish REM sleep, yet patients who take MAOIs do not exhibit any obvious cognitive deficits (Siegel 2001).

REM Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_eye_movement

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is the stage of sleep characterized by rapid movements of the eyes. During this stage, the activity of the brain's neurons is quite similar to that during waking hours; for this reason, the phenomenon is often called paradoxical sleep. Most of the vividly recalled dreams occur during REM sleep.

REM sleep is so physiologically different from the other phases of sleep that the others are collectively referred to as non-REM sleep.

During a night of sleep, a person usually has about four or five periods of REM sleep, which are quite short at the beginning of the night and longer at the end. It is common to wake for a short time at the end of a REM phase. The total time of REM sleep per night is about 90-120 minutes for an adult. However, the relative amount of REM sleep varies considerably with age. A newborn baby spends more than 80% of total sleep time in REM mode, while people over 70 years old spend less than 10%. The average is 20%.

Uber Sleep

Is likely to be the most widely known type of polyphasic sleep, and also the most strict. It consists of six naps of 20–25 minutes each, occurring four hours apart throughout the day. This is also the closest schedule to the type that has been studied by Claudio Stampi in connection with long-distance solo boat races.

this should connect you to mysql.. incase you have error.. mostly the following error might be generated..

ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

to solve this.. do the following..

First, copy a configuration file, in somewhere like 'support files', choose 'my-medium.cnf' or 'my-large.cnf' .... and paste it in /etc/my.cnf, yes change the name to 'my.cnf'.

In that file you can change the path to the socket file, 'Socket = /path/to/socket'.Another thing I did is make a empty 'mysql.sock' file and place it in the 'path/to/socket(you can also copy it somewhere from the installation package).

and then

Startups!!

I have been following meebo from the day it started, thanks to nithin who sent me the link to meebo. For those who don’t know about meebo, it’s one of those startups which was started by three. Meebo’s product simply “web messenger”. No doubt this is the best web messenger I have used till date. Anyways, more than their product I am interested in their business and it makes you feel good when you see start ups like meebo, which started just few months ago and they are already big. May not be as big as any other software company but they are recruiting and have recently moved to a new office in Silicon Valley. The following posts part one, part two, part three on their blog about from where they are getting funds was very interesting and gave me quite a good knowledge about VC’s and something new I learnt was about angle investors.

When you see startups like meebo you will be inspired and inspiration for you to do something, something similar which you have been thinking to do from past couple of years. Even though it is difficult to do it all alone, believe me it is not easy - the times when I felt to quit doing everything, reason: at this stage it can be anything like when you have to be with your family, when you feel your family needs your help and things like when you see people of your same age are making more money by working for someone else and many more.. and being alone I feel is the biggest drawback.. as you don’t have anyone else to talk to, talk about your ideas, help you in what you are doing, be a support – but again I think people with real passion and believe in themselves; believe that they can make it will never quit. Anyways at times when you feel low companies like meebo becomes the factor for your motivation. Want to write more but got to go.. need to get ready for meeting a client… btw, this client is also in verge of starting a company.. he has invested big time.. lets see how successful he will be in market.. his product will be out very soon.. will post about him and his company..

dam intersting #1 fictional story for 500 words max

[fw:]

There was a contest in to write a fictional story for 500 words max which wud start with the line "On a dark and foggy night, a small figure lay huddled on the railway tracks leading to the Bangalore station"

This is the award winning story !!!!!

On a dark and foggy night, a small figure lay huddled on the railway tracks leading to the Bangalore station. At once I was held back to see someone in that position during midnight with no one around. With curiosity taking the front seat, I went near the body and tried to investigate it. There was blood all over the body which was lying face down. It seemed that a ruthless blow by the last train could have caused the end of this body which seemed to be that of a guy of around my age. Amidst the gory blood flow, I could see a folded white envelope which was fluttering in the midnight wind. Carefully I took the blood stained envelope and was surprised to see the phrase "appraisal letter" on it. With curiosity rising every moment, I wasted no time in opening the envelope to see if I can find some details about the dead guy. The tag around the body's neck and the jazzy appraisal cover gave me the hint that he might be a software engineer. I opened the envelope to find a shining paper on which the appraisal details where typed in flying colours. Thunders broke into my ears and lightening struck my heart when I saw the appraisal amount of the dead guy!!!!! My God, it was not even, as much as the cost of the letter on which the appraisal details were printed.... My heart poured out for the guy and huge calls were heard inside my mind saying "no wonder, this guy died such a miserable death"... As a fellow worker in the same industry , I thought I should mourn for him for the sake of respect and stood there with a heavy heart thinking of the shock that he would have experienced when his manager had placed the appraisal letter in his hand. I am sure his heart would have stopped and eyes would have gone blank for few seconds looking at the near to nothing increment in his salary.

While I mourned for him, for a second my hands froze to see the employee's name in the appraisal letter... hey, what a strange co-incidence, this guy's name is same as mine, including the initials. This was interesting. With some mental strength, I turned the body upside down and found myself fainted for a second. The guy not only had my name, but also looked exactly like me. Same looks, same built, same name.... it was me who was dead there!!!!!!!! While I was lost in that shock, I felt someone patting on my shoulders. My heart stopped completely, I could not breathe and sprung in fear to see who was behind......... splash!!! Went the glass of water on my laptop screen as I came out of my wild dream to see my manager standing behind my chair patting on my shoulder saying, "wake up man. Come to meeting room number two. I have your appraisal letter ready"

Speeding up firefox

forevergeek.com has a useful guide on speeding up firefox for broadband users. basically after getting to the hidden config settings you set the browser to request more data that it usually does.

1.Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages MUCH faster now!

Things I started to observe and not doing anything about them...

!) A traffic police stops a auto (you know the small auto, which carries goods) and charges for no reason, the auto guy tries to defend but they threaten to seize the auto. They charge him 250 bucks, I did not find any reason why the auto guy should be fined.

!!) Parking lot, the parking guy helps me park by bike and take it out.. also takes care of it while others are parking.. I pay him 2 bucks for all this.. End of the day 2 police men come and take almost 50% of his earnings, reason.. hmmm, no reason..

P.S. *I did not do anything about it..
**To all the sons and daughters of these corrupted officers, you are the only one who can change your mother or father.. just don't accept anything they buy you which they cannot afford with their salary.
