Phone calls from Gmail

This is one feature most of you might be waiting for sometime now... I think it will take another decade before it comes to India but for now this news is for US & Canada gmail users... You can call any phone right from within Gmail. Dialing a phone number works just like a normal phone—just click “Call phone” at the top of your chat list, and dial a number or enter a contact’s name. At the moment, this feature is only for Gmail users in the U.S. Calls to the U.S. and Canada will be free for at least the rest of 2010, and calls to other countries will be billed at our very low rates. http://www.gmail.com/call.

Inserting inline images in gmail

This is for those who are wondering how to add a image into your email/gmail.

Here is how you can add images to your email without having to do any stunts...

Follow the below steps:

1. Open your email in any browser you are comfortable with
2. Login

The following four steps just need to be followed only for the first time...

3. Click on Settings link on the right top corner.
4. In the page which appears... find the "Labs" tab.
5. In the list of items listed Labs tab... search for "Inserting images" which is 6th form the bottom most. So, it is suggested to start checking from bottom.
6. Enable the option beside "Inserting Images", then go down the page and click "Save Changes".

That's it.

Now the mail will reload itself...

7. Click on Compose mail.
8. Try finding the insert image icon , it can be found under the subject box... in the list of icons... in between the smiley and link icon... (Check this link if you are still not able to locate the icon.. http://brokekid.net/2009/04/14/tips-tricks-for-google-apps-adding-images-to-gmail/ )

9. Click on it.. browse and upload the image from your computer or just give the web address... and click ADD IMAGE... This will insert the image into your mail.

Though the above looks like a huge procedure... it is pretty much straight forward... once you get familiarized with it... it will take a second to add a new image into your mail.

1. Application shortcuts: with this feature, people can place a shortcut on their desktop to Gmail. With this, users can open Gmail in its own window, one that looks like a regular Windows application window. This is useful for those that don't want the clutter of the address bar, bookmarks, etc.
   
   

   Many websites, such as email services, operate like actual programs, similar to those on your computer desktop.

   Open these websites just like any other programs on your computer. Create an application shortcut for the website you're on:
   
   

   • Click the Page menu
   • Select Create application shortcuts.
   • In the 'Google Gears' dialog box, select the checkboxes where you want shortcuts to be placed on your computer.
     • Desktop
     • Start menu
     • Quick launch bar
   • Click the OK button.
     
     When you double-click a shortcut icon, the web application opens in a special streamlined window that gives you as much working room as possible.
   
   
2. You can add "gmail.com" as a search engine in the address bar, thus allowing you to search your emails directly from the address bar. so, once set up, you can type "gmail to:me from:larry" into the address bar. Once you press Enter, a Gmail window will open with the search results already loaded.
